School – good preparation for the real world?

Upper secondary school essay from 2003.

Why do we go to school? Is it for living, for fun or just because we don’t have any other place to go? If schools are here to help us in our future, why is it so boring?

The real purpose of schools is to make us ready to advance to the next level of education. Teachers teach us well in different subjects like grammar, mathematics and history, but do we learn things that will help us in our life after school?

In fact, only social skills are improved at school. You need them when you talk to teachers, friends and other school people. But there are so many other things that you don’t learn at school – you just have to deal with them by yourself. You don’t really learn babysitting or filling bureaucratic forms at school.

There should be a possibility to choose an optional course, which would teach you everything a normal living person needs. The teacher would give some useful tips to young people, who would have then these tips in mind when they leave school – and enter the world of living.
